A BALT sandwich at Urban Cookhouse

Urban Cookhouse will be opening its newest location at 3000 Devine St. on Saturday, Aug. 19, providing another fast-casual restaurant for the area, but with a healthier yet not boring twist.

The rustic yet modern building echoes what is to be found within — updated takes on classics like sandwiches, wraps, salads and heartier meat dishes.

“We are the only restaurant (that I am aware of) in most all of the cities that we are in to cook our meats on The Big Green Egg grill — which if you ask any grill-master, weekend barbecuer or dad anywhere they'd all agree is the best grill for flavor and consistency on the market,” says Stephen Smyly, the director of human resources for Urban Cookhouse.

A few standouts include the BALT, a bacon, avocado, lettuce and tomato sandwich; and the Pepper Patch salad or wrap that’s full of black beans, corn, red onion, tomatoes, pepper jack cheese and a roasted jalapeno vinaigrette. Their lime marinated steak makes an appearance in several dishes, and the pink-hued strawberry lemonade is worth a few refills.

The Devine Street location, which joins the Irmo one that opened in December, will serve as the company’s flagship location, which means that any new menu items, recipes and operational procedures will be rolled out at this location.

“The reason for the choice to do all of that here is that Will Gillespie, owner and president of Urban Cookhouse, was born raised and now lives here in Columbia, so this is also home base for our corporate operations,” says Smyly.

The restaurant will also feature online ordering and a drive-thru window for quick-pick ups. There are 12 other Urban Cookhouse locations throughout the Southeast, including one in Mount Pleasant.
