On Jan. 27, 2024, despite the gray skies and a few rain showers, the 11th annual Pig and Oyster Roast took place successfully at City Roots. This event was organized by local chef Kristian Niemi, who roasted up the hogs, while Chef Hiopolito Sanchez served sides. F2T Productions and Honey River Catering Chef Gabrielle Baggette Watso also partnered for the event. The event was a complete package of food, music and fun, attracting a sold-out crowd of shuckers. Chef Niemi and his team cooked up a whopping 40 bushels of South Carolina Bull's Bay oysters, along with whole pigs from Carolina Heritage Farms. The menu also included unlimited servings of Mac n' Cheese, local collards, cornbread, slaw and baked beans. The annual fete benefits several local charities, farms and businesses.
