There are quite a few new Columbia beers hitting taps this week. First up, Wednesday, May 23, is the River Rat Brewery New England IPA Release starting at 4 p.m. If you’re in love with the big, juicy NEIPA craze, then their Astronaut Sauce IPA, brewed with Simcoe, Citra, El Dorado, Mosaic and Galaxy hops, is going to be right up your alley.
I’m not 100 percent sure that the two beers featured in The Whig’s Small Batch Saturday with Souvenir Beer Co. and Cottontown Brew Lab this Saturday are brand spanking new, but they are very small batch and only being offered in two places, so even if they aren’t technically brand new, they will be brand new to most folks. Souvenir and Cottontown brewed two batches of the same beer for the base of these beers and then each fermented and conditioned them differently. Modern Classic Vol. 1 by Cottontown is a 7.8 percent ABV Double IPA that has been double dry-hopped with their house yeast, and Modern Classic Vol. 2 by Souvenir is a Belgian double IPA clocking in at 8 percent ABV.
Finally, mark your calendars for next Wednesday, May 30, when The Grand hosts a Cottontown Brew Lab Pups ‘n Pints events from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. which will be the exclusive launch of Cottontown’s new summer beer, Carolina Crush. Guests are encouraged to bring their four-legged friends and have their picture taken to put up on The Grand’s dog wall.
Girls Pint Out Returns, Hosts Friday Mix and Mingle
Finding fun local drink events to highlight in this column every week hasn’t always been the easiest thing to do, but I used to almost always be able to count on really cool events from the Columbia chapter of Girls Pint Out. The nonprofit organization based around “building a community of women who love craft beer” always planned original pairings or a cool new twist on a tap takeover. GPO went on a bit of a hiatus there, but my gravy days are back because they are planning a relaunch starting this Friday, May 23. The Relaunch of Columbia GPO Mix and Mingle does down at Columbia Craft Brewing Co. from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. The ladies of Girls Pint Out will have some giveaways and a list of other stellar upcoming events, but they also want the event to be a chance for interested women to tell them what kind of events they want to see and what kind of beer community they want to create here in Columbia. You can read more about the relaunch here.
