what: Mushroom Nori Wrap
where: Good Life Café, 1614-A Main St., 726-2310
Good Life Café opened its new Main Street location last week, and based on my first stop there, it’s off to a smooth start. The raw vegan menu will seem familiar to those who have dined in the West Columbia location, which is still open, but the interior of the new spot on Main reflects their move to become a full-service downtown restaurant and bar — and not just a juice bar, either. This week’s Bite is a nori wrap filled with marinated mushrooms and cauliflower that’s been blended with cashews to create a texture like rice, along with avocado, red pepper, pickled cabbage; it comes with a delicious kale salad topped with a Brazil nut and tahini sauce. I washed it down with a Westbrook White Thai ($5). Think about this for a second: makizushi that also happens to be raw, vegan and free of grains and gluten, paired with a local microbrew? Chef Sharon Wright’s Good Life Café is one (or two, really) of a handful of Columbia restaurants that could easily succeed in a bigger city. But, thankfully, they’re here. Good Life Café on Main is open Mon-Thu 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Fri-Sat 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.; and Sun from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
