EdVenture is known for being an award-winning education center that puts a fun spin on learning about science for kids. EdVenture After Dark takes that same attitude and makes it for adults. After all, what’s the best way to get adults interested in science? By applying it to drinking, of course! This Thursday, May 15, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., EdVenture After Dark presents The Chemistry of Cocktails. Adults will experience a night of drinks with a scientific twist as they learn from mixologists about the physics and chemistry behind their favorite cocktails. There will be fermentation demonstrations, beer density experiments and presentations by local experts as well as music, food and of course, drinks. If you’ve never been to an EdVenture After Dark event before, this sounds like an especially good one to try out. Tickets are $25 per person and include two drinks. They can be purchased at the door or ahead of time at edventure.org. As usual, proceeds to go the Yes, Every Child Fund, which allows EdVenture to provide underserved families with admission to EdVenture for only $1 per person.
Drink a PBR for Aaron Graves
If you want to get even more karma stacked up on Thursday night, swing by The Whig for the Jasper release party, which will also be benefiting Aaron Graves, beloved Columbia musician, record label runner and all-around best guy who was recently diagnosed with a brain tumor. The official party starts at 7 p.m., but anytime that day, you can swing by and have a “pounder for Aaron,” a PBR tallboy for $3. All proceeds from the pounder go to Aaron and his family.
Deck Out Your Pet
If you’re still not done participating in cool events for good causes, then you should check out Puppies and Tiaras, part of Doggie Style Week going on at TLC Sports Bar Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. This is a pageant for both you and your dog where you can bet it’s going to get pretty wild. Contestants are judged in three rounds of competition including a walk-about, doggie style wear and inspection by one of Doggie Style Week’s fabulous drag queens. The $5 entry and admission goes towards SC Pride and PETS Inc.
Watch Guys Get Hosed Down
Finally, New Brookland Tavern is hosting a Luau Jamboree Extravaganza on Sunday at 6 p.m. featuring free vegan barbecue as well as performances by Burnt Books, fk mt., Prizehog and Braindead. But the real kicker here is that there will also be a guys-only wet T-shirt contest hosted by MC Dave Zum Tode, and $5 to turn some misogynist club nonsense on its ear still sounds like a good call to me.
