The Columbia branch of Basil, a Charleston-based Thai restaurant group, has been humming along at Cross Hill Market since last May. If you haven’t been yet, the menu will seem familiar if you’ve visited the original location on King Street in Charleston, or the other spots in Charlotte and Mt. Pleasant. For this week’s Bite, I went with the restaurant’s namesake entree, Basil, made with a sauté of red bell pepper, onions and garlic in a Thai chili sauce, and served with a bowl of jasmine rice and a choice of protein. I chose the pork cutlet as the protein, and washed it down with a Westbrook White Thai on draft ($5.50). As with Basil’s other locations, you can order a dish to your preferred spice level, but they also provide a chili tray on request to adjust the heat level to your liking. Basil is open for lunch, Monday through Friday, 11:30-2:30 p.m.; and for dinner, Monday through Saturday, 5-10 p.m. (11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday). On Sundays, it’s open continuously from noon to 9 p.m., which sounds like the perfect recipe for a lazy, late afternoon brunch at the full service bar, or a rarity in Columbia: Sunday dinner.
