what: lamb & limas
cost: $10
where: Olive Grill Mediterranean, 1211 Taylor St., 799-9090

When Abdi and Leslie Nasehi decided to move closer to the South Carolina side of their family, they chose downtown Columbia as the new home of their Mediterranean restaurant, formerly located in Jacksonville, Fla. Jacksonville’s loss is our gain, though, as the new lunch spot just off Main Street offers something unique among Columbia’s Mediterranean dining options: Persian food. Reflecting Abdi Nasehi’s roots, Olive Grill’s menu features dishes like ghormeh sabzi and this week’s Bite, lamb and limas. This dish of stewed lamb shank is served in a big cup of jus, along with a plate of dill-scented basmati rice and lima beans. Mixed together, it was a perfect antidote to last Saturday’s blustery rain. Comes with pita bread and your choice of a house or Mediterranean salad, as well as hummus or tzatziki sauce. (I went with the Mediterranean salad of chopped tomato, cucumber and onion and a side of tzatziki sauce.) Olive Grill is in a recently remodeled space previously occupied by Hong Kong Chinese restaurant. It’s open Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
