what: Grumpy Old Time
ABV: 11 percent
cost: $20.59
where: Green’s on Assembly

We’re suckers for sours, and South Carolina-based Westbrook Brewing won our undying affection with its Gose, which became widely available in Columbia this year: a salty, tart, easy-drinking libation loved by even some non-beer-lovers we know. Westbook’s rotated out the Gose for the winter, but continues to produce some really cool sour beers. This one, a collaboration with the Charleston Beer Exchange is in a more serious vein: The brewers made a Belgian strong dark ale, which clocks in at a hefty 11 percent ABV, then aged it for 18 months in oak barrels that were previously used to age Laird’s apple brandy, with the addition of some wild yeasts and funk-creating bacteria. — Eva Moore
