New festival to celebrate the classic Southern seafood dish

Even though Columbia isn’t technically seaside, we still have our fair share of the iconic dish gracing menus around the metro, from higher end tureens garnished with decadent little touches to your no-frills bowls ladled in at a diner. In celebration of shrimp and grits from all walks of life, Columbia Food Tours is hosting Columbia’s first Shrimp & Grits Fest on Saturday, June 18 from 6-11 p.m. at the Columbia Marriott.

If you’re the kind of person who needs a reason to enjoy a burrito, you’ve got a few days to use the excuse that May is National Burrito Month. And for those who were not aware, Del Taco opened its first Columbia and only South Carolina location in March of this year at 145 Harbison Boulevard.

It’s been quite a while since 420 Columbia Ave. served anything other than Italian dishes, but soon the location will house the Root Cellar, which will specialize in locally grown meats and produce. Longtime Stephano’s owners Karen and Stephen Lollis decided to retire after operating the eatery since 1977.
