Chapin Poised for Sept. 30 Vote on Strong Mayor Structure

The Lexington County Elections Commission has certified the necessary number of signatures on a petition seeking a referendum to change the town’s form of government from a mayor-council (strong mayor) to a council form of government.

The Commission certified signatures of 192 Chapin registered voters, well above the 146 required for the petition. An election date has been tentatively set for Sept. 30.
The change was sought after three council members complained that Mayor Skip Wilson would not allow them to put anything on the agenda and repeatedly ruled them out of order when they tried to make a change.

The conflicts between Wilson and the council have been going on ever since he took office in January.
