Corey, No wonder you are stuck writing for the Free Times... blatant errors (perhaps ignored intentionally) and a writing style best suited for a blog.

Thank goodness for Free Times. It's a voice crying in the Republican wilderness that is South Carolina right now. I have no doubt that this voter i.d. requirement will discourage people from voting. What if the person doesn't look like his photo because of a different hairstyle, glasses, etc? Poll workers come from the general population and I have seen firsthand (by working at the polls) that they carry their prejudices with them.

Thank you, Corey, for this detailed expose'. We need many more articles to shed light on the motivation of the politicians that waste time on non-issues.

I want voters to prove their citizenship in order to vote. I don't care how they prove it as long as it is a picture ID that is sponsored by either the federal or state government. Many liberals know that they are more likely to gain the vote advantage when it comes to undocumented citizens currently living in SC. To me it’s common sense: show some type of picture ID that says...hey I live here, pay taxes and have a right to vote! Too Easy!

"Many liberals know that they are more likely to gain the vote advantage when it comes to undocumented citizens currently living in SC." On the surface, that may seen circuymstantially true. However, I am consistently amazed by the number of Republicans I meet who villify illegals on the one hand, then surreptitiously hire illegals to work for them, primarily in the construction and hospitality industries. Isn't this somewhat -- well, hypocritical?

Are you serious? Illegal aliens voting? I have to tell you, I know and have known many, many, undocumented immigrants and the idea the they'd have time to go to the polls and cast a vote is so ridiculous it make us laugh. I've discussed it with my "illegal" friends and it's always a chuckle. Voting, ha! It's making laugh right now! They're too busy scrubbing toilets, gutting chickens, and washing the dirty sheets of their Republican pay-masters to vote. Voting illegals, ha ha ha ha, there's a huge voting group for you.

Keeps the Liberals from getting 400 dead people and 30,000 bused in low lives from voting for another Dumbama & crowd.

Do you not need a picture ID to cash checks? Do you not need picture IDs to enter Federal buidings? Recently, I had Federal Jury duty (pulled from voter registration lists) and had to show picture ID to enter the Federal Courthouse. Would you simply excuse these "poor and disadvantaged" people from the their duty as citizens?
GreggFebruary 21st 10:09am
30,000 low "lives" bussed in on voting day. That's hilarious! Not sure where you'd find 500 available buses, and where the money would come from and not leave a paper trail. This thread is making me laugh so hard, Budweiser's shooting outta my nose! What's the matter you got your feelin's hurt cuz a black man is running your empire? "Dumbama" Ha! What a hoot!

Read this article and then read the comments some of the people have made. Talk about proving the writer's point.

I understand the difficulty in providing solid evidence to prove claims of illegal voting (as there has been no official documentation of it) and I'm open-minded enough to believe that just because there is no proof of the problem doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. Also, as Gregg said, it's important to keep in mind the requirement to provide a photo ID for jury duty when considering this issue. However, I find it interesting that this was not even a minor concern while the GOP was in the ruling majority. I seriously doubt that there has been such an influx of illegal voting in the past year to warrant this sudden concern. It's very telling that voter ID has become an issue in this political climate and not before. Yet I find it as difficult to believe that Democrats are genuinely interested in protecting voting rights (rather than collecting enough votes for themselves) as I find the claims that Republicans are trying to "protect the polls." Politics, unfortunately, is about power and "winning," not preserving human rights and protecting the powerless. There's evidence of this on both sides of the GOP/Dem fence. I find it dangerously naive to presume that either party is primarily interested in the rights of South Carolina's citizens in this issue. I'd need to see some solid documentation of illegal/dishonest voting in coming elections before I'd OK the voter ID bill. Even then, I'd agree that the state would have to provide registration cards with photo IDs and funding for awareness programs to make it possible for minorities and, particularly, the poor to meet voting requirements. However, it's important to keep in mind that the funding isn't going to appear out of thin air--it would have to come from citizens' own pockets. Is Voter ID such an issue that we're willing to pay higher taxes to support it? This is something for both Democrat and Republican voters to keep in mind.

I am a democrat voter. I feel that we should definitely present a photo id to the election poll. I however, would not be happy about paying higher taxes on something. Also, I don't think it would be fair to the citizens that work hard to get there pay.

@Gregg It is important to note that people still have to be able to prove who they are and where they live when they *register* to vote - the issue in question with Voter ID is whether people must also have to produce such information on the day they show up at the polling precinct, even if they already have their voter registration card with them.
