Re my comment re bars: Please note there are many ethical bar owners in 5 Points and they far outweigh the ones that are out just for the $. Drive by early in the morning and see who has trash in front of their places and you'll get a better idea.

While I no longer frequent Five Points late at night, I would hate to see bars forced to close at 2am. Columbia has always been a late night town and I'd hate to see that change.

I admit it's been a few years since I finished undergrad at USC, but haven't the bars always had to close by 2am...? I don't really understand this debate about it. And I am truly baffled that the focus of this article as far as police go is drunk college kids! What about the dramatic increase in theft, muggings, etc that has happened around 5 Points in recent years?

I'd love to see Blue Cactus, Sid/Nancy, El Burrito, etc all on state or main.. If there was a burrito spot on state, it'd kill. and if more independent businesses moved to main street that'd be awesome.. get some of those wig stores outta there. But i'd hate to see 5points just be a bar spot/corporate takeover. Good article, good job.

I saw a piece of literature few years ago form a marketing company trying to solicit business from places on Devine St and etc.. They were showing the demographics at USC. It included the population of the graduate school as well. It was a number like 89% of the student body was the age of 20 or younger. I found it odd that bars in 5 Points and even places like Wild Wings would target a population that only 11% or less were of legal drinking age. I don’t know what number made up that 11%, but non drinkers and commuters would have to factor in. Basically it’s like targeting a known illegal income source. I would be interested to see a related article to this one finding the exact age demographics of USC and the population numbers of local versus commuters.
