Coble is calling it quits because his work is done; there is nothing left for him to mess up. Like a good Democrat, Coble completely destroyed the city of Columbia, leaving it in financial ruins. Coble did great - wasting $1 million on a skateboard park and other projects. He found out the same thing that Obama will soon discover: "The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money". (Margaret Thatcher gets credit for that quote) Unfortunately, the candidate slate for the next election leaves a lot to be desired. There really isn't a candidate that stands out, a candidate capable of rebuilding what Coble tore down. Hell, the best thing for Columbia might be to simply dissolve it and let it be annexed by Irmo and Cayce - they have better leaders. Steve Morrison? He wants to run the city? Really? Wasn't he general counsel/Chief Operating Officer of PMSC when Larry Wilson repeatedly lied to the shareholders? Didn't they take a successful company and kill it off? PMSC's stock was trading for $45/share and, within a year - when all of the lies were revealed and people saw how poorly the company was managed - it was sold to CSC for about $7/share. He violated his fiduciary duties to the stakeholders of PMSC (shareholders and employees); do you REALLY want to trust him as a politician? Morrison also was one of the attorneys suing the state dept of education to take tax money from Lexington/Richland 5 school district and give it to 'less fortunate' counties like Marlboro county. Obviously, this man supports 'redistribution of wealth'. It wouldnt surprise me if he took tax revenue from Columbia and gave it to 'less fortunate' cities in the state. Why doesnt HE take his millions and give it to the poor - rather than trying to give other people's money away. Joe Azar... has this man met an office that he did NOT want to run for? Isn't he a perpetual candidate for city council? And now mayor... How nice. Sparkle Clark. Anyone that labels themself as an 'environmental activist' should be immediately removed from serious consideration for Mayor. Columbia needs someone to repair the mess that it is in - not out hugging trees. Other than being a tree hugger - what qualifications does this person possess? She works for one of the most inefficient pseudo-governmental agencies around: the US Postal Service. (Of course, having a mayor that might go 'postal' and take out city council might not be a bad thing.) Since she is a lesbian, she doesn't have a realistic chance of getting elected but if she can get some gay men working on her campaign, she might have the 'prettiest' campaign signs. Steve Benjamin... The tax man cometh. If you support higher taxes, then you should support Benjamin. He was supporting a special tax district to raise money so USC could build a waterfront park - until he decided to run for mayor and then he resigned from the committee. Yes, Benjamin supports raising your taxes to build a nice little waterfront park for USC. If you want to see what other taxes he wants to raise, vote for him... He's not running for mayor because he wants to 'fix' or help the city - he just wants to get elected somewhere. He's kinda like Jake Knotts and Joe Azar - just keep running for office, any office, until you get elected... then ride the taxpayer's gravy boat into retirement. He will get a lotta money and support from a lotta powerful Democrats - because he jumped on the Obama bandwagon early... In fact, he hired a former Obama campaign staff member to run his campaign. Kirkman Finlay. He's got that Paul Bunyan look going, doesn't he? He's been on city council for a while... so that's a strike against him. However, he HAS tried to stop the city from doing 'business as usual'. He TRIED to stop Coble's wasteful money spending and bad accounting practices. I dunno... maybe if he shaves the beard, I might be able to vote for him... So there ya have it... a slate of people wanting to be Columbia's next mayor. Not that great, huh? Anybody else out there? Someone that doesn't run for every office? Someone that doesn't want to jack up my taxes? Someone that has the ability/capabilities to actually repair the damage done by Coble & Friends, Inc?

I appreciate Michael P's comments, and gained information from them. Let me correct one glaring mistake: I have only run to serve our city. There is no other governmental office i have ever run for. My passion is for our city. I have been encouraged to run for other positions but they do not hold my passion to help, build, create like working in our city does. I have no intention to run for anything else, and at this point in life, no higher office should I be selected by our citizens to serve. Why do I keep running for office? To create a better city. Regardless of whether elected or not, I continue to work for a better city. I am proud of the fact that I have said most of what all the other candidates are saying, and I said these things 10 or more years ago. It is almost as if they have gone back and read my platforms, and then adopted them for their own benefit. Columbia is my home, born and raised. My passion is helping people. My passion is building, creating, and seeing people happy, healthy, and motivated. It is why i have volunteered as a coach, teacher, social volunteer, newsletter writer, and so much more in Columbia. It is why I have bypassed much wealth, materially, to gain even more wealth spiritually. We come into this world naked with nothing, we leave with a cheap suit, or at least half of one because who knows whats under that other casket flap. We own only our name, nothing material. It is our name that embodies all that we are, have accomplished, and the respect due to us. Those are the things that make me happy, the intangibles, far more than the material. Maybe now you can understand why I run and keep on running, I hope.
