My husband and I have taken our two sons, Tripp and James Klimka, all over the Southeast to skateboard. They have been skating for well over 10 years and we have seen every kind of park there is. They started out at "the Slab" which for those that don't know, was an old foundation of a torn down warehouse on Lincoln Street off Knox Abbott. We were at the Owens Field Park this past weekend and saw all the little guys out there. It helps these "new skaters" have a safe, fun, skating experience. I think it is a tremendous park and will bring many, many visitors(not hoodlums) to Columbia to skate. Congrats Pour It Now!

I just don't see the difference between a skate park, a baseball field, a basketball court, running/biking track or any other public amenity. There are some obnoxious skaters, but there are also plenty of obnoxious kids running around with basketballs in my neighborhood. There are also great kids who never bother anyone playing basketball at my neighborhood park. That's always going to be true. At least the kids at the skate park aren't getting into trouble somewhere where they don't belong.

I'm very happy to see the efforts of Pour it Now alongside the City of Columbia S.C. working together! This is an inspiration to the surrounding areas and cities like Augusta, GA to come together and show our city officials that it CAN be done! Thanks Free-Times for bringing skateboarding to the front cover & feature of your publication!

It is a shame that anyone would criticize any facility that is geared towards keeping the youth off of the streets. If we don't make an investment into our children, who will? Should we make fun of them for not fitting into traditional sports that are over run with the million dollar criminals that dominate the NBA or NFL? Or should we provide them with a place to go, so it keeps them out of your driveways and businesses? I am grateful to Dave Toole and Ryan Cockrell's efforts to get a skatepark in Columbia.

I think it's great there's finally a skate park in Columbia. You know what it needs now? Artwork. Some of the best parks in major cities invite graffiti artists in to paint. Why not here? I'm probably jumping the gun because it's so new, but I think it'd be a really cool idea. I'm one of the few graff artists in SC, so it's difficult raising interest in it, but i think it's worth a shot. What do y'all think? here's some of my stuff - http://thespraycan.com

Great article! I especially liked the quality of the photographs and the issue's cover! Thank you for presenting positive view of what has often been a misunderstood sport.

Congrats to pour it now and the city council! This is coming from a 35 year old taxpayer and father. I was out there skating it (more like watching) for the past two weekends. It is absolutely getting a lot of use. I heard someone say, "finally spending tax money on something that I can use" As far as the "alienated kids with an aversion to team sports" comment.. I have an aversion to team sports and I'm certainly not alienated or disaffected. Skaters tend to be some of the brightest, talented, most creative, free thinkers of any group. No matter what your child's passion, support them!

Awesome grand opening and great article in the State Newspaper. The citizens of the Rosewood Community should feel very proud to have this wonderful skate park in their community. Job well done by the City of Columbia Park & Recreation Department for marketing this park.

"Just a week ago, mayoral candidate Steve Benjamin cited the skate park as an example of an unnecessary city expense." The time to vote is now btw. As awesome as the park is though I'm sure he's right... Columbia has bigger issues.
