Love Harry Potter, but hate to say it. for the most part, jk rowling was drawing from a hero's quest structure, and the british tradition of boarding school stories. harry, ron, and hermione came from the latter, and the progression was influences by the classics. It is hard not to draw comparrisions. Also, I think the first percy jackson book was finished back in 1994, and sold to miramax who secured film rights in 1997, and they just didnt get around to publishing the books till 2004-2005. Simularities might simply be that they drew from the same conventions of storytelling.

All that may indeed be the case, but, being illiterate, I cannot be a book critic. All I can judge from is the final product I see on the screen. In this case, the Potter films -- even the first two, generally regarded as the poorest, and which were directed by Columbus himself -- are leagues better than Percy Jackson.

Warner, your points are probably true (definitely true re: the heroe's quest structure, but what good hero/adventure story doesn't?), but as the author of the article says, it's ok to borrow, or even rip off wholesale, if it works. The problem with the this movie seems to be that there is not enough effort on anyone's part to make it work. I was a little interested in seeinng this movie, either despite or because of the apparent similarities; I think, though, I'll give it a pass and maybe pick up the books instead.

All the great stories are based on the hero with a thousand faces. I loved Harry Potter and I love Percy Jackson. It was a fine movie and they should go ahead with the franchise. I'm not illiterate, and I have found the first Percy book to be every bit as good as the first Potter book. Back to the movie - The actors actually were way better than the Potter kids were in their first movie. They actually had more than one sentence in a take, for example, in P.J. I did not, however, sit through the movie trying to see similarities to the Potter movies. I won't do that if the other directors - gasp- make a kids adventure movie as well. This is their job,after all.
