- Voters in 22 states and American Somoa hit the polls for Super Tuesday, as Democratic and Republican presidential hopefuls spar for coveted delegates. Results were unavailable before press time, although Mike Huckabee was declared the winner of West Virginia’s 18 Republican delegates. — RA
- President Bush unveiled his proposed $3.1 trillion 2009 budget, emphasizing national security. U.S. Rep. John Spratt, D-S.C. and chairman of the House Budget Committee, told The Associated Press the budget “bears all the hallmarks of the Bush legacy — it leads to more deficits, more debt, more tax cuts, more cutbacks in critical services.” — RA
- In the wake of former state Treasurer Thomas Ravenel’s cocaine bust, S.C. Sen. Harvey Peeler, R-Cherokee, filed a bill to require those running for public office to submit to drug testing, according to The Associated Press. Half of the Senate’s members have co-sponsored the bill, which could face a constitutional roadblock if it passes. — RA
- Richland School District 1 announced its national search for a new superintendent. Under allegations of not improving the district and test scores fast enough, the Richland 1 board decided in late 2007 not to renew Superintendent Allen Coles’ contract after three years. — JJ

- A state committee released a study saying gangs pose a significant threat to South Carolina communities. The report found that the average age of a gang member is between 15 and 16. Dropping out of high school, a lack of adult supervision and poverty were contributing factors to gang involvement. — JJ
- The S.C. House passed two bills aimed at immigration reform. The bills would crack down on employers hiring illegal immigrants and deny illegal immigrants public benefits, even domestic violence services. Gov. Mark Sanford backs the legislation. — JJ
