FlightKudos to University of South Carolina professors Steven Pearson and Robyn Hunt, whose play Flight explores the daring lives of early female aviators and references characters and themes from Chekov’s 1895 play The Seagull. Flight, which debuted in 2010, hits USC’s Longstreet Theatre at 8 p.m. tonight and tomorrow.

Senate Wants to Sell Off State Planes

The use of South Carolina’s two state airplanes became a flashpoint of controversy during budget talks last week — which ended with state senators voting to sell them. Controversy over the planes flared up in February when The State reported Clemson University was the heaviest user of state-owned planes. It sparked a legislative debate about whether college football programs should be using the state planes to recruit players.

Girls Rock is, when boiled down to its essence, about volume. But not just about the loudness of electric guitars and drum kits, or even the creative process of writing a song — it’s about volume on a much more profound level. As Kristin Morris, one of the two co-founders of the Columbia branch of the rock camp (along with Shannon Donohue), says, “the heart of Girls Rock is using music education and music performance as a vehicle for social change.”
