Councilman E.W. Cromartie, on the other hand, WAS elected to do something. Unfortunately, he has failed to accomplish anything. His greatest 'accomplishment' is showing up for council meetings - and using a handicapped parking permit that was issued to his mother to park in a parking spot reserved for the handicapped whilst he attended the council meeting. Cromartie is obviously mentally handicapped - but that doesn't qualify him to park in a parking spot reserved for the handicapped. Cromartie is an utter failure as a council member and should be immediately removed from office. When the residents of Columbia wake up and remove all of these incompetent incumbents, such as Cromartie, from office, the city might be able to recover from the years of mismanagement. At least Gergel has enough sense to allow the CITIZENS to decide for themselves the type of government to which they wish to be subjected and by which they wish to be abused. Cromartie and the others are afraid that a 'strong mayor' system would, effectively neuter them - as they should be. The city of Columbia needs someone to manage it - and to be held accountable for the management of the city. We've seen how the 'mayor-manager' system works - it doesn't. It resulted in Coble and Austin destroying what little the city had - while an incompetent city council sat idly by and allowed it to happen.

Get a strong mayor, the council is god - awful and try get the stinch of the last 20 dead years washed away. Set year limits, check out Charlotte's city plan, don't take 10 years to do it and act like somebody!!! Right now Barney Fife has my vote.

We all know who is puching this idea; its the state Newspaper, who is loosing circulation for trying be a social engineer instead of reporting the news. City leaders will not go for this idea because gthey will lose POWER. Thye city coffers are a slush fund for anone with a hairbrained idea. They give away money without strings to feather their nest rather then do good for the citizens.
