Not the whole story clearly. When the Feds show up with subpoenas for Green's bank records, we're likely to learn more than a reporter just asking questions can produce. Still an honorable effort here to the limits of what journalism can accomplish.
The FEC Filing was due April 15. Another is due in a few days. They're mandatory. If they are fraudulent, there are serious Federal penalties. The Feds don't stop asking for disclosures and they do get them. Their warning letters are alarmingly clear about consequences.
There will be questions from people who must be answered and who have the power to check the accuracy of what they are told. If Green can't produce a bank statement from February showing a balance of $10,400.00 the Federal Government will know it didn't fall from the sky.

How dare Greene or any other citizen not selected by the Dem party in SC run for the Senate? This is outrageous. The Dems claim to be for the little guy and here is one wanting to run. He should have bought a dog. Then he would have a friend not connected to the Dems.
AbcasiaMay 24th 08:22pm
Trust me; Carol Fowler does not speak for all SC Democrats, especially under-employed veterans like me. How awful! Maybe Mr. Greene’s campaign skills aren’t the best, and maybe his policy stances aren’t the best, but it’s kind of inspiring that someone in his position would run, and now. I mean, he’s certainly not the polished, career, lawyer-politician that Vic Rawl is, and I get the impression that Mr. Greene didn’t make his decision solely based on who his November opponent would be… but he must worry the Rawl bandwagon in some way… looks as though even their financial contributors are watching Mr. Greene’s moves. And if the SCDP is worried that he’s a GOP plant, how about getting to know the guy, before you dismiss him…

I am very concerned for Mr. Green. I admire his good intentions but we know where they often lead! I am hesitant to consider voting for anyone who is unemployed that is willing to spend their nest egg for such a grandiose objective. The way I see it...there is a lot more to this situation than can be reveled without additional scrutiny. If in fact his intentions are sincere I may respect this guy...but I sure would not vote for him. His logic appears to be very delusional.
T-ForceJune 8th 11:36pm
I demand an investigation! I do not believe this man had 10k to throw away. Further I think the votes came from intentional crossover voters, which cannot be proven, but the money trail can! Somebody in the SC Dem camp better look into this outrage!

The Democratic platform for decades was pro-slavery, in the 1800s. I've seen rich dems in New York, scream at blacks who walked on their property.
Now their racism really shows. Blacks are okay as long as they went to F'in Harvard.
Otherwise, keep off my lawn, boy!

John EmersonJune 9th 07:23am
Well, voters have picked him now, for whatever reason. If someone has served in the Air Force for 11 years, I think they have a decent point of view to go to Washington with. I'm hopeful that the money checks out and that the filing issues can be resolved. This could be the common man, like the majority of us, that has managed to sneak into the political game. If he could keep an open mind through the political process and vote for bills based on his own opinions, he would be a great Senator. That's all that I really want in Washington. I wish him the best.
As for Carol, certainly I wasn't there, but the article presents her as rather judgemental. Seeing that Mr. Greene was interested in the political process and unemployed, perhaps offering him a volunteer position would be more constructive, than discouraging his candidacy. Offering suggestions as to what requirements must be met and by when, would have been more helpful to the man than telling reporters (yesterday) perhaps people voted alphabetically. Then again, I don't make my living off the political process, so what do I know ;)
Have a nice day everyone! Welcome to the spotlight Alvin, you should have an interesting week.

Living here, I wouldn't underestimate the stupidity of certain Republican operatives in SC, but paying for Greene's candidacy would be a waste of money even from that conspiracy angle.
Jim DeMint is HUGELY popular in SC. Not only is he the most popular elected official in the State, he's probably the most popular in the South.
He just beat his Republican primary opponent 85-15% without any serious campaigning at all, and in fact, he's been spending his campaign money helping OTHER Republican candidates!
Plus he's an incumbent. Plus he's a Republican in a Red State.
The point is, DeMint's seat is about as close to a lock as you can get in a Senate election. The Republicans simply don't need to prop him up with "dirty tricks".
jgJune 9th 04:15pm
what a crock, and a set-up. Its already coming out this guy has had felony charges for obscene photos. And he didnt campaign AT ALL. Nobody had heard of him. This needs to be seriously investigated, not just because someone from the GOP probably paid his filing fee, but because somebody stuffed the ballots and it should be well documented who did it and how.
tbJune 9th 06:39pm
I'll tell you this much: if I lived in SC, I'd vote for this fellow 100 times. At worst, he's a Republican plant- but would still be better than that filth DeMint. And once elected, Mr. Greene would quickly discover how little power a Republican masquerading as a Democrat has in the Senate. At best, Mr. Greene is the ultimate anti-establishment Democrat- thus, infinitely better than the corporate-approved candidate. He could even end up being a less-useful Al Franken, or a MUCH less useful Bernie Sanders.

Boy, Palmetto denizens, you're really giving Arizona a run for the money in the crazy department.
Jim DeMint is one of the reason's I'm glad I no longer live in the Palmetto state. Beautiful country, especially around Greenville, but you keep electing idiots like DeMint, and allow Appalachian Trail Mark Sanford to remain governor.
The fact that DeMint(ed) is HUGELY popular just shows the ignorance that goes with a crippled public education system and backwoods fundamentalism.
If Greene is a plant, I feel sorry for him for getting duped, and I hope the SC GOP gets what's coming to them.
Former Palmetto VotrJune 10th 09:44am
I absolutely stand corrected on Greene. WOW, what a nightmare.
KCJune 10th 04:48am
My question is, and maybe someone can answer...but why the hell is Jim Demented a lock? This guy is nothing more than a troublemaker...but like his Oklahoma soulmates Coburn and his clone James Inhofe that must explain his popularity. Yes, I suppose in the GOP doing nothing but using constant campaign rhetoric is an avenue to popularity...oh for the era when politicians were elected based upon personal merits. I guess in the Faux Newz age you can be a popular politician without actually doing your job or anything....
If you want to see a prescient movie to describe Mr. Demint's popularity watch "Idiocracy", it sort of demonstrates why stupid people elect other stupid people: because they fart in session...making all the gibbering monkeys chortle with glee. I'm a historian of sorts with my speciality being Russian history. It's funny but the moment the Russian Empire began its decline and eventual fall to Marxism began with the 18th Century hubris and failures of ultra-wingnut Nicholas I.
I used to liken Bush to Nicholas I...or maybe Peter III. Hell, maybe the explanation is some people are masochsits and that explains Bush, DeMint, Palin...and Blanche Lincoln.

Good for him, I say. Isnt he living the American Dream? Arent we all taught as idealistic young children that even the someone from the humblest of beginnings can one day lead this nation? Carpe Diem, Mr. Greene! Go ahead and shake up the good old boy network a little bit!

We knew democrats don't know why they vote for a candidate besides, change and hope. Now we know they don't know who they vote for... at least in SC... We have a "Republic if we can keep it" said Ben Franklin... I'm not so sure we can keep it with the walking around IQ in this country... Cheers!
BoriaJune 10th 10:44am
The Democratic Party works actively to support inexperienced candidates at the local level with access to training, voter information, meeting space, access to phone banks and other tools. Activists often help these candidates. However most have the sense to start in a low level race. If Mr. Greene really wanted to start in Democratic politics, a place could have been found for him to cut his teeth and learn.
However having a pending felony charge and problematic discharge from the military isn't a good place to start and the US Senate race is aiming a bit high for a begnining.
William HamiltonJune 10th 04:56pm
I heard a great theory that Rawl actually got Greene into the race so that his allowed contributions from individuals would be higher ($1,000 x 2 for a contested primary and general election). Check it out.
jenniferJune 10th 05:05pm
Based on their political views, as described by GreenvilleOnline.com on May 25, I agree much more with the views of Alvin Greene than Vic Rawl. For example, "Greene is for wrapping up the wars in the Middle East and using that money for domestic programs, such as job creation, education and Social Security.", while Rawl is "not happy with the situation in Afghanistan but said he understands it", whatever that means.

As fishy as this is, SC Dems need to take advantage of this opportunity. Hell, he could the the democratic Joe the Plumber or maybe even the next Sarah Palin. His credentials and political skill and intelligence seem to be equal to hers. The true issue that I gave is that other sites have reported that Greene earned a Poltical Science degree from the University of South Carolina. I believe the investigating needs to begin at the evaluation of their academic standards,. because all it appears that Greene studied was porn, and he didn't even suceed in getting away with that.
ConservativeGentlemaJune 11th 12:39am
If he bought $10,400 worth of lottery tickets what are his chances he would win $1,044,000. That is the average average salary for the U.S. Senate paid out over 6 years. He played the risk that had better stakes than the scratch cards. He was unemployed now has a potential job and will gain contacts that may lead to other employment in the state or federal government for the rest of his life. He will gain an education about government from the school of HardKnocK's over the next few months. Even when he looses in the general election he will have already made the contacts and meet the people that he needed to secure a job. That will likely lead to a salary many times larger than any job he could have gotten within his own district. This guy may have taken the biggest chance of his life to better himself and it looks like it may pay off. Plus it creates news, starts investigations, sells news papers and puts people to work. It brings money into his district. How many news trucks have been in his area buying gas eating lunch and looking for him. Alvin Green is already stimulating the economy in his district. Whats his opponent doing for the district?
twistedviewJune 11th 10:46am
Alvin Greene's affect during TV interviews is as odd as this whole episode of no campaign but big win. He appears to be searching off-screen for assistance as in a signal to return to rote comments. His eyes don't have the look of "I'm here and I'm engaged in this moment", resembling instead more of a deer in the headlights vacancy. Enough investigating and we'll know the source of the money and what he actually knows about being a US Senator. In the meantime, a fine candidate was beaten and the re-election of an incumbent was assured. I don't agree that DeMint was a shoo-in. Even 15% of Republican voters showed he doesn't represent them by voting for his primary opponent. Those who think Mr. Greene could be another Joe the Plumber, take note that he already has had the quick fame then ask yourself "So, where's Joe nowadays?"

No one has done enough original research to note Mr. Greene was interviewed before the election and his positions published in The Greenville News on May 25, 2010.
http://www.greenvilleonline.com/article/20100525/NEWS/305250032/Former-judge-newcomer-challenge-for-Senate
It is incredible how most blindly accept that nothing was known about Mr. Greene prior to the election because they themselves knew nothing. Perhaps after reading the Greenville article, voters preferred an ordinary citizen who focused on their problems to a traditional, party-supported politician.
What is so extraordinary about a citizen without campaign connections paying for a filing fee with a personal check? Are only professional politicians supported by their party allowed to run for office?
It is unfortunate that possible character issues have obscured the intolerance of someone running for office that is not as glamorous as a former beauty pageant contestant or as articulate as a media savvy, self-interested politician.
Could Carol Fowler be more smug and condescending? What an embarrassment.
Besides her, what is really embarrassing is that an unknown person without political connections cannot run for office in this country without being ridiculed.
DaveJune 12th 08:42pm
Dems are hypocrites. They espouse that they are for "working families" and African-Americans, and here they cannot get behind their own African-American candidate -- a veteran! Liberal press is being oh-so-correct, but imagine if this was a poor white unemployed veteran, running on the Republican ticket?
LYNNJune 14th 10:02am
I see no reason to equate genuine concern with condescention, nor utter inexperience with "pro-little-guy-ness." Alan Greene is not being ridiculed. He is being questioned--just llike any other candidate. One newspaper article does not make him a known quantity. Being a U.S. Senator requires abilities-including being articulate and persuasive, and being able to field quaestions. The issue here is not whether Greene is "a good guy" or "deserves" to run, but whether he has the skills, experience, expertise, and leadership to successfully represent anyone if sent to Washington. He doesn't. I've watched his interviews on YouTube, and those are qualities that Alvin Greene just does not demonstrate. He may mean well. For all I know, he may even agree with me. But he would be eaten alive in Washington, and do no good for anyone. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYtnrvn9xd4

1st yuo can not access pornagraphy in the student Libaries at USC. (The girl lied ) Now for the rest. Alvin has 13 years military service a college degree and 60% of his parties vote in the primary. How is he not qualified to run for the Senate? The big Liberal machine is trying to steal the peoples vote away form them with baggering this Cnadidate to death. Clyburn is a huge racist. Assuming becaue Alvin is Black he could not have $10,000. Alvin could win this thing. The people are tired of the career politicians. This is democracy at it's core.

I really cannot believe pornography can be accessed at a State Agency like the University of SC, if this is the case, then state workers can access this at their desks. I am shocked again this is our tax money hard at work, allowing students (college) to access pornography in our public state school's library. This is where the investigation needs to start. It is nice to know you can walk in with an old identification card sit at a computer and access this information without being traced....Wow! As far as Mr. Greene, he needs the right political coaches and he too will be able to throw the bull like the other career politicians or perhaps he is honest and innocent and would be able to communicate the interests of the common man who has no million dollar background or job to fall back on. Who would you want representing your interest a commoner or a seasoned politician who is removed from your enviroment and your experience. I think I would prefer the man who has lived as I have and could speak to my plight and represent the points and interests of the common everyday man. Politicians do not know anything about humbleness, they only have their statistics they send their staff out to retrieve, then they memorize the data and layout a notion to the people that they care...PLZ Let's all give ourselves a break from the norm. I say to him without sin or flaw cast the first stone...starting with our TOP state Government officials...Child PLZ....and to the national media, have your field day...you ought to look deeper into the fact that STATE Gov.'t must be in need of an overall, if we are desparate for a change...I mean any kind of change we can get...So it is not Mr.Greene on parade it is the State of SC, have we gotten this way because of the effective leadership of State Officials...bascially STATE officials got us into this mess...simiply by playing politics and not effectively being bipartisan and operating from a strong political stance.

Dem Cross-over Produced Haley, Greene, and "Republicans for Obamacare"
If you believe as I do that 14% of the “Republicans” voting in the SC GOP Primary were Democrats, it answers three questions: 1) Why did 14% of the “Republicans” in a right-wing orgy like the SC GOP Primary vote FOR Obamacare? 2) How did Alvin Greene become the Democrat Senate nominee? 3) How did Haley go from a pre-scandal mid-May Rasmussen 30% (with 22% undecided) to a 49% Primary share? A June 2 poll still had her at 31%.
Assuming that the 22% undecided divided their votes in proportion to the four candidates’ standings in mid-May, 31 plus 14 is 45, or close to what Haley pulled. Shrewd Dems (with the emotional intelligence that GOP Asperger cases lack) realize that if numerous lengthy late night calls and Marchant's semi-credible polygraph are “on the table” along with Bauer’s suggestion that Haley clear herself with a polygraph but Haley’s chosen not to do so, the candidate most likely to implode before November is Haley. The theory that Haley’s jump from 31 to 49 is all due to most of the 22 undecided going for Haley is not only contrived, but only answers the third question, not the other two. My theory answers all three. The shrewd cross-over Dems voted for Obamacare, left no one minding the store to stop unemployed felon Greene, and successfully gave it to Haley.
Hey, Republicans did this in the Wisconsin 1972 Primary and put McGovern on the path over Scoop Jackson, Muskie, and HHH. Turnabout is fair play to produce a Sanford-with-ovaries – or a Sheheen victory when further evidence arises.

US Senate Candidate Vic Rawl's Election Protest - Part 1
its all there.
The members of the EC who voted against the preponderence of evidence will be outed by name.
Some of who were here-to-fore Republicans such as Chad McGowan. Others were spineless such as Zach Croft who had attended the rally in Columbia demanding Sanford's resignation but stayed on the sidelines (not on the Capitol steps holding a sign). Baccari Sellers who made the motion to take the debate into secrecy out of public view. When Vic Rawl picked up the baton that Chad McGowan dropped, Sellers claimed he would raise a million $ for Rawl.
How much would a rematch cost if it was by mail? Why wouldn't Greene go along with a rematch? He seemed confident that 60% was not luck on national TV. Other a questions about why Sheheen had a similar number of votes as Greene when a runoff with Rex was predicted by all the polls. How about a rumor having Sheheen on a campaign card with Greene underneath, would that explain why the Sheheen campaign wanted to end the Rawl challenge quickly. As my Daddy use to say 'something is rotten in the woodpile"

Mr Greene running for the senate is a right that we all have. If Mr greene is unemployed and saved this money from his unemployment check I say good for him. If this money came from someone to keep the
democratic party from having a good canidate to run for the Senate, then I would say a high crime had been committed against the people of South Carolina. If Mr Greene lets his yard grow up in weeds he would not be a canidate that I would support.
