This story makes me very upset. I will say, candidly, as a candidate, that Sparkle should have that endorsement. She very clearly has a great deal of passion, respect and history with the gay community.
I also don't understand how they can claim that I wasn't running when they questioned the other candidates. I announced my candidacy in early October, which I believe was before Morrison, and I was the second or third candidate to file. I signed up on the very first day the filings were open.
This is extremely unfortunate. I have to agree with Ms. Clark's comments that she filled out question 17 "improperly." I also really, very truly want to know who told them I "wasn't running" when they were questioning the well-funded candidates.

Thanks for weighing in, Aaron, and for the fact-check: You and Grant announced your candidacy before Morrison, back in October (Proof: www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQuZImZ2TuU). I have to say, though, your campaign was pretty under the radar until 2010. I only knew about your candidacy because I was a fan of your show, and I wasn't sure how seriously to take it then. So I can't fault the Pink Party folks for not knowing about you back when they were starting this process.
Anyway, things are different now. What's your take on GLBT issues in Columbia?

I don't fault them, per se, for not knowing about us. I just wanted to set the record straight. I am still upset that they would nominate two candidates and pass over Sparkle Clark after all she has done to directly aid the gay community.
I am a strong advocate for equality for the GLBT community. I also will not tolerate discrimination based on gender identity, sexual preference or any other personal choice designations that do not impact a person's capacity to perform their duties. I strongly support the freedom for a person to marry whoever they choose, and I also believe very strongly in freedom of expression.
When it comes to issues like this, I will always side with liberty and tolerance. I believe this should be a nation (and a city) of acceptance for a broad spectrum of viewpoints, even if those viewpoints might be unpopular. And I'm glad to see that we seem to be moving in the right direction. Who would ever have imagined that candidates for Mayor of the capital of South Carolina would be arguing with each other over who deserves the GLBT vote? I guess that's a wonderful thing, in its own right.

Well articulated, Aaron. And Yay for Sparkle!

Finlay is a member of the Church of Apostles which was formed in response to the Episcopal Church's acceptance of gay ministry, and specifically preaches against homosexuality. This should be called into question.
