Just one small step for the drinking public, and one giant step for more government control and smaller revenues when the city needs them most. I love Columbia. Council just cannot get out of its way.

Lets move forward. this is the 21st century, we cannot regulate peoples behavior. Leave the bars alone.

Yet again our plan to curb bad behavior by a few is to punish many. I don't personally frequent bars, nor do I judge those who do. I do, however, get tired of seeing our elected leaders address the results of problems rather than the actual problems. If a few people are causing problems, use our current laws to punish those people (jail, fines, house arrest) and let the rest of us be.

when the h--- is government going to get the h--- out of our business aand let us live our lives like we want, this is becoming a communist government from the very top and now down to the local govt trying to tell everyone what to do, when to do it , how to do it and taking any freedom we think we have away, by the way do you carry your papers with you all the time, they may make it manditory to show them when they try to arrest you for nothing, only the idea that they want to. This used to be a free society, but now I have my doubts of any future freedom

There was a time I would've opposed this limit but now, I must agree with the proposal. Five Pts on Friday night/Early Saturday is like Fort Lauderdale without an ocean....There is nothing GOOD that can become of binge drinking until Sunrise. I've seen the cops presence, and the blue lights when things go wrong. Too many of our already limited resources are abused keeping order in Five Pts and the Vista while the rest of Columbia goes unprotected. How many designated drivers are there?. Betcha very few. If there was a dragnet, our jails would be overflowing with DUI's...PLUS, alot of bars in Five Points are pulling the trick of putting drinks on tables in front of underage consumers with the drinkers claiming "They were here when we got there".. You can make enough money closing at 2am Five Points. That is long enough to drink. Be glad you're not in Ohio. Closing time there is 12 midnight. PLUS, we as a society need to impress on college students, our disapproval of binge drinking and laciveous behavior. "Animal House" was a movie. It is not acceptable behavior in the real world. This is the time you build character and leadership instead of promoting alchoholism and debauchery. Plus, parents who go in hock to pay for their kids education should be appaled at how their Johnny and Mary are behaving. If mine were boozin' it up on Friday/Saturday nights, the "Yo-Yo" principle would be in immeadite effect (Your on your OWN kid..No more financial aid from Mommy and Daddy). I didn't raise my kids to be drunks and whores..Period. they better not be in the bars when they should be studying or working to help pay for college..Otherwise, I'd probably insist they go to the Army Recruiting station where Uncle Sam would pay for their education after he "man's them up" a bit.

According to a WIS story the 2 am fountain shooting was the result of two rival gangs fighting. The shootings in the Vista are centered around a single club which has a largely black clientele. The obvious similarity here is that these shootings are being carried out by blacks - gangs in one instance and patrons of a black club in the other. Late night bars are not the problem. Blacks are. It is also obvious that if a bar has a high rate of criminal violence associated with it, then it's liquor license should not be renewed. Simple fix there. So far as the gangs - well law enforcement needs to step up and handle what we are paying them for. Quit worrying about ticketing people for not wearing seat belts and other unimportant things and get on top of the gang problem.
