What a great article. I lived in one of their places when I was in school. He has a "handyman" working for him who is on call 24/7 in exchange for free housing (something the handyman "Jay" volunteered to us freely). Once I had Mr. McMaster come over and look at our front door, which was essentially a piece of plywood painted white. When asked if he would consider adding a lock to the top and or bottom of the door, he replied "Well, if someone really wanted to get in, no amount of locks would stop them. No, I won't add more locks." A water pipe burst in our kitchen, and they decided to rip up the wall and fix the pipe, but this took close to two months to fix, during which we couldn't use our stove because it was moved. We also had a room that had a MAJOR leak from a bathtub from above it causing flooding and mold, and again, it took months for that room to be fixed. After all of that, they still had the audacity to keep some of our deposit because they felt our bathroom wasn't clean enough when we moved out (even though I spent an entire day making sure it was spotless; it was cleaner than an operating room). Countless times they violated their contract in which they said they would notify us at least 24 hours in advance if someone was going to come look at our apartment. You really shouldn't have to talk to your landlord on a weekly basis. There's a reason why students call them slumlords.

Do voters really want this man to handle our state government like he handles his rental properties?
Green Street has been looking like a slum area for many years now & landlords that don't take responsibility for their property and tenants' behavior need to be called on it.

His recent "legal opinion" that was written for Sen. Darrell Jackson regarding Code Enforcement finally makes sense. Thank both of you for making sure we serfs are bombarded daily with yards full of junked cars, useless appliances and household & human waste while you work so diligently to protect your own interests. Marc Mylott and the City should be ashamed of their gutless reaction (in essence, suspending code enforcement until this is resolved through the court) to this self serving jerk. Thank you, Mr. McMaster, for allowing my property value to decline and my quality of life to be eroded in order to make sure your financial desires are fulfilled.

We are current tenants in a McMaster property on University Hill. When our door rotted through, they nailed a board over it so water would stop leaking into our kitchen. This took two weeks. On one of the coldest days of last January our heater broke, and they gave us broken space heaters for the three days it took for them to fix it. Maybe it had to do with the fact that the piping they brought over to bring the heating unit up to code has been sitting in our kitchen, unused, since last semester. Our hot water heater rusted through the bottom and caused the ceiling of the people living below us to collapse. I also found out that the attic space above my room lacked insulation, and had to threaten to install it myself in order for Jay, who works night and day for food and shelter (and not pay), to come install some. How will these people run South Carolina?

I rented from the McMasters last year. The lease we signed said that the McMasters would install a washer and dryer when we moved in. I moved out this month with my dirty clothes because that particular residence still has neither washer nor dryer.
