S.C. Rep. Joan Brady of Richland County told a group of political leaders and economic development officials tonight that Boeing has agreed to open a production facility in South Carolina.
Brady was speaking to officials and others gathered at an Engenuity SC Ignite event held in Columbia. Among those at the event were USC President Harris Pastides and Mayor Bob Coble.
South Carolina officials have been lobbying fiercely for a production facility that will reportedly produce 787 Dreamliner aircraft.
“Establishing a second 787 assembly line in Charleston will expand our production capability to meet the market demand for the airplane,” Boeing CEO Jim Albaugh said in a Bloomberg report. “We’re taking prudent steps to protect the interests of our customers.”
The move is a victory for South Carolina development officials and a loss for those in Washington state, where production is located. Boeing had earlier threatened a machinist union with opening a second production line in South Carolina, UPI reported.
Machinist Local 751 President Tom Wroblewski told reporters that Boeing had betrayed union workers' loyalty.
