An agreement has been reached to improve care at the troubled C.M. Tucker Jr. Nursing Care Center in Columbia.
The U.S. Department of Justice announced the written, legally binding agreement with the S.C. Department of Mental Health on Jan. 16. The Department of Mental Health runs the Tucker Center. About 360 elderly people live at the nursing home on Harden Street. Many Tucker residents have severe physical and/or mental disabilities.
The agreement follows a DOJ investigation in which the federal government alleged that some Tucker residents suffered preventable deaths, injuries and illnesses. Mental Health disputed most of the feds' allegations.
Under the agreement, the state agency pledged to ensure that Tucker residents receive proper medical, mental health and psychiatric care; pain management; protection from harm; and other services.
In an exclusive report, Free Times detailed the Tucker case in the July 23 cover story "Death at C.M. Tucker."
