An agreement has been reached to improve care at the troubled C.M. Tucker Jr. Nursing Care Center in Columbia.

The U.S. Department of Justice announced the written, legally binding agreement with the S.C. Department of Mental Health on Jan. 16. The Department of Mental Health runs the Tucker Center. About 360 elderly people live at the nursing home on Harden Street. Many Tucker residents have severe physical and/or mental disabilities.

The agreement follows a DOJ investigation in which the federal government alleged that some Tucker residents suffered preventable deaths, injuries and illnesses. Mental Health disputed most of the feds' allegations.

Under the agreement, the state agency pledged to ensure that Tucker residents receive proper medical, mental health and psychiatric care; pain management; protection from harm; and other services.

In an exclusive report, Free Times detailed the Tucker case in the July 23 cover story "Death at C.M. Tucker."

It's a shame that you pay so much money to stay at these places and for whatever reason the few "screw-balls" that work at places like CM Tucker do the crazy and worse things imaginable and it is the patient that gets hurt or worse case scenario loses their life. I hope Tucker learns from this I only wished that the culprits that inflicted the pain, death and injury could get poetic justice. I refuse to ever work again in The Dept of Mental Health until it is really improved and reformed!!!

Do You Support a Sales Tax Increase to Fund the Bus System?

The bus system in the Midlands has long been without a steady source of funding. In November, Richland County residents will vote on a referendum that would raise the sales tax by 1 percent to fund the bus system and other transportation projects. Do you support the sales tax increase?

I'm a bot, don't pay attention to my vote
Yes, this is the best way to fund the bus system.
No, I don't support this tax increase.
 Fund the buses another way.
