A one-minute radio ad narrated by a Columbia pastor will blanket the airwaves across South Carolina this week thanking Republican U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham of Pickens for his leadership on climate change legislation.
The ad was paid for American Values Network, a faith-based issues advocacy group with chapters in nine states. It cost more than $10,000 to produce with a “total saturation” buy in the Palmetto State market and will play on mainstream and Christian radio stations, according to Kristin Williams, who is handling media inquiries for the group.
“All across the globe, climate change is devastating the lives of millions and contributing to political unrest that threatens our national security,” says the Rev. Wiley Cooper in the ad. Cooper is a retired pastor [copy corrected] formerly with College Place United Methodist Church. He says too many politicians believe it’s safer to do nothing. But not Lindsey Graham. “Now more than ever, we need leaders who will look for solutions instead of excuses. Thank you, Senator Graham,” Cooper says.
Graham has taken hits from conservatives in his own party over his support for climate-change legislation. Two county Republican parties in the state have censured him.
Williams says the point of the ad is to help get the South Carolina faith-based community mobilized and behind climate-change legislation that is moving through Congress. The faith-based community in South Carolina is well connected to the national security community, she says, part of which has also been supporting the bill to help get the United States off of its addiction to foreign oil.
The American Values Network also has another South Carolina connection. Former South Carolina Democratic Party Chairman Don Fowler is part of its national advocacy committee.
