"the astonishing mess Columbia municipal government became on his watch." say what? I had my trash picked up every week; when I called 911, someone responded; we have some of the best drinking water around. The property maintenance codes were enforced; design/development review proceeded apace, and so one. Was the financial record-keeping shoddy--sure---but there's a whole lot more to good government than tidy balance sheets.

"While that should have been a foundation for strong and forceful leadership (people will follow a politician they like personally and feel connected to), instead it became a symbol of Bob’s unwillingness to step up — and step on some toes when necessary — in order to supervise the city properly and move it forward." --- In a council-manager form of government such as Columbia's, the mayor doesn't have the authority to supervise the city. That's the city manager's job.

Yes, a city manager hired and supervised by a council led by the mayor. He has limited responsibility, but he does have that responsibility. When the going got better, Coble was the first to step in to report all the good news. He just never acknowledged that he had been asleep at the wheel for several years while claiming that everything was just fine. Not a terrible job, but just a little unseemly.

The new mayor's takeover of the Big Office in city hall speaks volumes about where Cola might go from here. City staff and council members who want to speak with Benjamin, now that he has had his apotheosis, will enter the throne room, duck their heads, grasp their forelock and stammer out their requests and info. Cola is likely in for a royal mayoralty on its way to becoming a strong mayor form of government. I don't understand why the public wants such an abomination. History is full of such an arrangement gone wrong, and they want to follow suit. Well, we shall see. I hope not, but hope not often triumphs over experience. Read I Samuel, Chapter 8 for a good laugh. Appropriate after the religious ceremonies attendant on the elevation of Benjamin to godlike status.

Having your trashed picked up, someone answering 9-1-1, and having "drinkable water" are what our city taxes are for. However, being a total failure when it comes to responsible management of the people's money is reprehensible. It sickens me to think about all of the money wasted, but gee he did give it the "ole college try."
