Prohibition will open April 10 in Columbia.

COLUMBIA — All good things take time. As is the case with a new cocktail bar set to open on Main Street in Columbia.

Prohibition, a Charleston-based bar and restaurant centered around the era of forbidden alcohol and flappers, opened its doors in the Capital City on April 10, according to a press release.

The opening comes two-and-a-half years after owners announced they’d be bringing the location to Columbia. The cocktail bar and small plates eatery is set for 1556 Main St. in the former space of Main Street Public House, which has sat vacant for years.

Prohibition’s first location is on King Street in Charleston and opened more than a decade ago.

Owners hope to make the Columbia location a hub for both local musicians, as well as welcoming national names, adding to a list of other restaurants and bars on the strip overlooked by the S.C. Statehouse that offer live music like The Joint and Market on Main.

“We’re excited to join Columbia’s incredible live music scene,” the bar’s founder James Walsh said in a press release.

The bar’s food program is led by chefs Greg Garrison and Analisa LaPietra. Garrison leads the Charleston location’s kitchen and helped open a sister concept, Repeal 33, in Savannah. LaPietra has worked as a sous chef under Garrison at the Charleston location.

On the menu, diners can order small plates like grilled street corn for $9 or enjoy larger portions, like a grilled ribeye for $48.

The cocktail program will be led by Jim McCourt, the group’s existing beverage director, and is set to have riffs on classics like the Main Street Manhattan. The bar will place an emphasis on offering a wide variety of Irish whiskey, according to the release.

The bar, set for 1556 Main St., opened April 10.
