Under the Radar: The Joy Kills, Daddy Lion
Tonight at Foxfield Bar and Grille
The way The Joy Kills
tear into a song recalls the Motor City rock scene of the late '60s, echoing icons like The Stooges and the MC5. Vocalist Eric Haugh approaches the deranged, sometimes cartoonish mania of Iggy Pop in his self-mutilating heyday, while his backers are almost militant in their intense onslaught of drums of and power chords. Though no less passionate, local headliner Daddy Lion
takes a lower-key approach to its own hazy and reverberating indie rock, showing more interest in exploring its own ideas than rilin’ up the kids. The songs rumble with some appealing grit, but the band’s intentions seem mostly docile. With Coast Nothing.
