If there’s one artist most responsible for EDM’s recent ascent to the pinnacle of music’s mainstream, it’s Skrillex. Former post-hardcore rocker Sonny John Moore has stormed charts and festival stages since trading in blaring distortion for equally blaring bass knocks about six years ago, his much talked about early EPs and colossally successful shows busting down the doors that acts like Bassnectar and Baauer and dozens more have burst through. Of late, no style of music has seen greater success, and Skrillex’s trailblazing is a big part of how it happened.
All this to say that an appearance by Skrillex in your town — such as his just announced Oct. 27 date at Columbia’s Township Auditorium — is a big deal, and never bigger than it is right now. The unveiling of this local date comes right on the heels of Moore’s buzzed about set at this past weekend’s Lollapalooza festival in Chicago, just one of the massive concerts he’s played since releasing this year’s Recess, which bowed at No. 4 on Billboard’s album chart back in March. Love it or hate it, Skrillex and EDM have at least temporarily taken over, and — whether you love the music or hate it — Moore’s appearance in Columbia promises to be one hell of a massive party.
