Someone stole a laptop containing the names and Social Security numbers of people in the South Carolina Health Insurance Pool, a state program that provides insurance to people with pre-existing conditions, the AP reports. It's the latest data breach in a state that's seen several over the past few years.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission gave Duke Energy's proposed Lee nuclear power plant a thumbs up on an environmental test, but the plant "still has a long way to go to receive a construction and operating license," Reuters reports. The plant is planned for Cherokee County in the Upstate.
Right whales are still seriously endangered despite a controversial law requiring boats to slow down to avoid hitting them. The Post and Couriertakes a look at how the whales are doing, and it's not pretty. "Today fewer than 500 are known to exist in the north Atlantic Ocean, a slight improvement in recent years," the paper reports. Just five right whales were seen in South Carolina waters this past year, out of 25 total Atlantic Coast sightings; there were 16 S.C. sightings the year before; and 18 the year before that.
