Harrell Investigation Reportedly Continuing

Plus, Man Arrested in Boating Death of USC Student

Citing “sources familiar with the matter,” The State’s John Monk reports S.C. House Speaker Bobby Harrell is still being investigated as to whether he misused campaign funding. State Attorney General Alan Wilson has recused himself from the case, which is now being handled by 1st Circuit Solicitor David Pascoe. Sources indicate it will be Pascoe’s call whether to seek an indictment against the House Speaker, seek more information or dismiss the case.

A maternal activist group is calling on Kroger grocery stores to ban the open carrying of firearms in its locations. Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America launched a national campaign Monday imploring leaders of Kroger to prohibit guns in their supermarkets, citing incidents of gun violence in and around stores, as well as open carry demonstrations in which people allegedly brought loaded guns into Kroger locations. Kroger operates markets across the nation and in the Midlands.

A man has been charged in the boating crash that killed USC student Hailey Bordeaux.  According to a report from WIS, the South Carolina Department of Natural resources arrested 38-year-old Chad Morris and charged him with reckless homicide by boat and failure to render aid. Bordeaux, 21, was killed July 4 on Lake Marion when the boat she was in was hit by another boat. She was a senior at USC.

Not so fast, Johnny Football. While former Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel is getting most of the headlines as he attempts to win the starting quarterback job with the Cleveland Browns, it was former South Carolina QB Connor Shaw who raised some eyebrows Monday night during the Browns’ preseason game against Washington. Shaw was 8 of 9 passing for 123 yards. He also had a touchdown pass, coming on a 45-yard Hail Mary as time expired.

Authorities in Myrtle Beach are asking for help from the public in solving a number of highly publicized killings that took place during Bikefest over Memorial Day Weekend. According to reports from the Associated Press, three were killed and a fourth person injured in an incident that resulted from a large fight. Officers indicated the killings could be gang related. Gov. Nikki Haley has called for an end to Bikefest, citing the violence.
