Gubernatorial candidate Sen. Vincent Sheheen called yesterday for a “pause in the legal battles” over South Carolina’s constitutional amendment banning gay marriage until the U.S. Supreme Court decides the issue. Since Monday, reporters had been asking for Sheheen’s reaction to the news that a federal appeals court had ruled Virginia’s ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional.

Employees at the local Dorn VA Medical Center wrote down incorrect appointment times in order to hide their long wait times, according to a new internal audit. For months, the VA has been embroiled in a scandal over long wait times resulting in poor patient care.
Superintendent of Education Mick Zais now says a rewrite of the state’s education standards can take into account the national Common Core standards. Previously, he’d said the Education Oversight Committee must start with the state’s previous standards, entirely ignoring Common Core — “We’re going to start with S.C. 2007 standards, Texas standards and a couple of other states, and we’re not even going to have a copy of Common Core state standards in the room for the writing panels,” he’d said July 7. He was persuaded to change his view after consulting with a staff attorney, according to The State. Conservatives across the country have agitated against the federal standards, and South Carolina legislators voted earlier this year to toss them out in South Carolina, forcing the rewrite.
